The SOLV Beach and Riverside Cleanup
Presented by the Oregon Lottery

Thank you for cleaning up our beaches and waterways!

Target volunteers get ready to scour Cannon Beach.

Over 4,650 volunteers turned out statewide to remove trash and improve watersheds as part of the SOLV Beach & Riverside Cleanup. Volunteers removed an estimated 64,700 lbs of trash, cleared 13.75 acres from invasive plants, and recycled 129 tires and 2,544 lbs of scrap metal, plastic, and glass. Cleanups took place at all of Oregon's beaches and along many rivers including the Deschutes, Clackamas, Columbia, Willamette, Rogue, Umatilla, Umpqua and Wilson Rivers. Doing double duty to clean up trash from inland sources, before the fall rains wash it out to sea supports the health of our local waterways, wildlife, people and tourist economies.

Marine Debris en route from the 2011 Tsunami in Japan

NOAA National Ocean Service estimates that some debris could approach the West Coast in 2013. SOLV may need your help at that time for additional cleanups so please stay tuned. Researchers from the University of Manoa, Hawaii are tracking the trajectory of the debris with is likely to reach the Hawaiian Islands soon.

No if's, and's, or butts!

Cigarette butts are the number one litter item found by volunteers in Oregon and at cleanups worldwide, and can be highly toxic if accidentally eaten by children or pets. Cigarette filters are composed of a plastic that not only persists for years in the environment, but also leaches hazardous chemicals like nicotine and heavy metals. Most things made out of plastic like cigarette butts, do not biodegrade, but instead break down into small pieces that resemble food to fish, birds and marine mammals.

SOLV Bags
SOLV is committed to reducing waste at all our events. SOLV plastic trash bags are composed of 70-100% recycled plastic. Each ton of recycled plastic bags used in place of new plastic bags saves the energy equivalent of 11 barrels of oil. SOLV is researching alternatives to plastic bags, and encourages volunteers to bring their own reusable buckets and bags to cleanup events.
