Youth Leadership for Community Action

Sponsored by The Ford Family Foundation, SOLV's Youth Leadership for Community Action program builds community in rural Oregon through service-learning projects. Students in Advanced Biology at Santiam HS plant trees and control invasives at Fisherman's Bend. This youth leadership development program is designed to train students to envision, organize, and implement successful community projects in partnership with community members. Students are taught and then utilize various leadership skills throughout the experience, promoting youth stewardship, civic engagement, and community awareness.

This program is specifically designed to meet the new Oregon high school graduation requirements. Students must demonstrate competency in the Career-Related Learning Standards and must successfully complete an extended application.

In its pilot phase, Youth Leadership for Community Action is on target to roll out in nine pre-designated communities around the state between 2005 and 2008. Currently, the program is active in Reedsport, Coquille, Powers, Vale, Cove and Union. The program was implemented in Mill City, Philomath, and Brownsville/Halsey from 2006 to 2007.

This website is designed to serve as a resource for students, teachers, and community mentors. Please click on the appropriate link to find resources specific to your needs.

An online forum bringing together all partners and all communities participating in this program is also available, creating a space for open communication, idea sharing, and troubleshooting. There is also a forum for teachers only.
