The Big Day

Enthusiastic volunteers will be coming to work on great projects, projects that make a difference in the community. Here are some things you should cover to get off to a good start:

The following steps will help ensure a smooth volunteer check-in process on project day.
  • Get there early!
  • Meet with key volunteers and crew leaders beforehand to review roles
  • Make sure everyone signs the Comcast Registration and Waiver form
  • Check that everyone is properly dressed for the project (i.e., boots, clothing, rain gear, gloves, etc.).
  • Before beginning work, give the Welcome and Safety talk (see below)
  • Thank volunteers for a job well done.
  • Make sure all tasks are completed and all materials are gathered from the site.

Last minute supplies checklist
  • Extra SOLV bags (if project is a cleanup)
  • Camera and film
  • Tape
  • First aid kit
  • Cell phone
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Extra raingear or SOLV bags
  • A copy of this page
  • A list of talking points for media interview

Making Signs and Maps

Help volunteers easily find your site. Create a map of the local area to include in your volunteer confirmation letter.

Signs from major intersections to your site(s) are also helpful. SOLV bags with a piece of cardboard inside work well. Use a large black marker to add arrows. Nail them to a post or wooden stake (available at hardware and home improvement stores). Be sure to remove at the end of the day. Stakes with numbered or color coded signs also make good tools for sending volunteers to sub-sites, every 1 mile along a road, for example.
