SOLV Insurance

As of 11/01/10

SOLV insurance coverage for Volunteers includes Commercial General Liability and Volunteer Excess Medical Accident. Coverage is extended to SOLV’s volunteers and those acting as agents of SOLV. In order to facilitate the handling of claims related to these policies, all volunteers participating in SOLV projects must sign a SOLV registration form and waiver. All registration forms and waivers are to be returned to SOLV prior to participation.

General Liability Insurance

SOLV has general liability insurance that provides coverage for third party property damage and bodily injury claims. This policy covers volunteers who act on SOLV’s behalf as follows:

  • The project must be a SOLV project with a trained volunteer/site coordinator who identifies himself or herself as a SOLV project leader.

  • Volunteers working at the direction of and within the scope of their duties for SOLV are insured for third party injury or property damage claims up to the policy limits. This liability insurance does not cover negligent actions where one volunteer may injure another. For this reason, good preventative safety practices and a thorough safety talk prior to beginning work are essential. Limits are $4,000,000 general aggregate, $3,000,000 for each occurrence. An injured third party can sue the individual volunteer or their partner organization, but any judgment in favor of the injured party would be based on proving negligence. Many homeowners’ insurance policies include an endorsement that covers the holder’s liability while volunteering. Volunteers should check their policy or ask their insurance agent about this coverage, especially in light that liability coverage is not afforded by SOLV for a Volunteer negligently causing injury to another Volunteer.

  • If a volunteer inflicts injury on another volunteer, the injured volunteer's personal medical coverage serves as primary insurance. There is supplemental excess medical insurance coverage available for eligible expenses through SOLV's Accident & Health Policy, which can pay for personal medical deductibles or if there is no personal medical insurance in place for the Volunteer.

Accident Insurance

SOLV provides Excess Accident Medical Expense Benefit for injuries to volunteers while acting on behalf of SOLV. This coverage provides for medical expenses not covered by personal medical coverage a volunteer may have, or it can reimburse for personal medical deductibles up to the Medical Accident Policy Limit and subject to its deductible. The maximum benefit per incident is $5,000, with a $50 deductible. Accidental Death, Dismemberment or Loss of Sight coverage is limited to $2,500 per incident.

Commercial Automobile Coverage

Volunteers using their own vehicles to transport SOLV materials or volunteers are afforded no auto insurance coverage by SOLV. The Volunteer’s personal auto policy applies for liability claims to third parties and passengers as well as any physical damage to their vehicles or other vehicles and property.
