SOLV Insurance

As of 04/02/08

SOLV insurance coverage includes Commercial General Liability, Accident, and Commercial Automobile insurance. Coverage is extended to SOLV’s key volunteers and those acting as agents of SOLV. Key volunteers are SOLV volunteers who have taken a leadership role (such as Site Coordinator, Team Leader, Beach Captain, or Stream Team Captain) at an approved SOLV project site. In order to facilitate the handling of claims related to these policies, all volunteers participating in SOLV projects (key and other volunteers) should sign a SOLV registration form and waiver. All registration forms and waivers should be returned to SOLV.

General Liability Insurance

SOLV has general liability insurance that provides coverage for property damage and bodily injury. This policy covers key volunteers who act on SOLV’s behalf as follows:

  • The project must be a SOLV project with a key volunteer/site coordinator who identifies himself or herself as a SOLV project leader.

  • Key volunteers working at the direction of and within the scope of their duties for SOLV are insured for third party injury or property damage up to the policy limits. This insurance does not cover bodily injury between volunteers and does not cover negligent actions where one volunteer may injure another. For this reason, good preventative safety practices and a thorough safety talk prior to beginning work are essential. Limits are $2,000,000 general aggregate, $2,000,000 for each occurrence, and $5,000 medical expenses for any one person.

  • An injured person could sue the individual volunteer or their partner organization, but any judgment in favor of the injured party would be based on proving negligence. Many homeowners’ insurance policies include an endorsement that covers the holder’s liability while volunteering. Volunteers should check their policy or ask their insurance agent about this coverage.

  • Event day volunteers are included as additional insureds under SOLV's commercial general liability insurance for $2 million for any claims related to property damage. If a person (not another volunteer) is injured as a result of a volunteer's actions during a SOLV event, the insurance will pay for the injured person's medical expenses.
  • If an event day volunteer is injured during a SOLV sponsored event, or if a volunteer inflicts injury on another volunteer, a volunteer's medical coverage serves as primary insurance. There is supplemental medical insurance coverage available for eligible expenses through SOLV's Accident & Health Policy.

Accident Insurance

SOLV provides Full Excess Accident Medical Expense Benefit for on-site injuries to key volunteers while acting on behalf of SOLV. This coverage provides for expenses not covered by medical coverage a key volunteer may have. The maximum benefit per incident is $5,000, with a $50 deductible. Accidental Death, Dismemberment or Loss of Sight coverage is limited to $2,500 per incident.

Commercial Automobile Coverage

SOLV’s Commercial Auto policy includes coverage for non-owned and hired autos. Coverage is extended to key volunteers using their cars to transport SOLV materials or volunteers to a work site. Liability limits for this insurance policy is $1,000,000.
